Mary Roda did a fantastic job of organizing the event considering it was not a traditional venue and the installation program was conducted in a...let's say a non private atmosphere. Thanks to Collin & Katrina who are the duo called Anamcara for providing the music and to “Turtle” our bartender. Along with Mary, thanks to Spencer Seitz, Jim Blackerby, and District Gov. Russ Bertrand for being such great ceremony presenters. Congratulations to the latest Paul Harris Award recipients including Elizabeth Candas and Spencer Seitz. Congrats, also, to Steve White - District Award winner; Maureen White – Rotarian Spouse Award winner; Dave Kring - Rotarian of the Year. – 2017-18 Proposed Budget vote: With no golf tournament fundraiser this year—which had been held for the past 3 years—this year's budget faced a $5,000 deficit compared to 2016-17. While the 2017-18 Administrative budget remains the same as 2016-17. The Charitable budget faced necessary reductions. So to maintain the same funding level as 2016-17 for the Charitable committee (l ine 5513) and International committee (line 5100), student of month (line 5611) was reduce from $1,500 to $500, and scholarship was reduced (line 5611) by $4,250. Also Rotaract (line 5711) was increased from $650 to $1,650. Some comments about the budget are attached. After some intense discussion and questioning, the budget was approved by the membership, with a few members voting against. Of particular note was Lori Horton's clarification regarding the amount of funds and how those funds from Balloon Festival proceeds are released each fiscal year between immediate charitable distribution and investment for future charitable distribution through The Wakefield Foundation.
--Filed Under “Old Business"/Charitable Committee: A Matching District Grant for 2016-17 which our club's charitable committee budgeted $1,500 for was never submitted by our partnering applicant, The Chariho Club. This was a very recent revelation. Therefore, the Charitable Committee had a $1,500 surplus in its budget and took steps to use the money for our local needs. The five organizations proposed to receiving $300 were: Welcome House, Jonnycake, Habitat for Humanity, Galilee Mission, & Domestic Violence Resource Center. Club membership voted to approve Charitable Committee's proposal to donate the monies to these 5 worthy organizations in our community.
--Meeting Time Committee: This committee submitted a report on a membership survey ranking meeting time options for our club's regular meetings. See attached: Meeting Survey. With this new information, the process to change regular meeting times will be as follows:
on Monday, July 31st – the board will consider and take a vote on meeting times
on Monday, Aug. 7 - the board's decision will be voted on by membership
during the week of Oct. 9th – the new meeting time will be implemented
Rationale for starting the new schedule in October: 1-District Governor visit on Oct. 2 was first in August, then Oct. 30—don't want to mess with it again; 2- our great guest speakers committee (Jim Blackerby, Sandy Cutting, Fran Alexalos. Elizabeth Candas) have booked a couple months ahead--they're set until September.
--follow up on Narragansett Art Festival : (note: the following are the written details from Art Fest Co-chair Ed McLaughin) Many thanks to all club members for their assistance at the Narragansett Art Festival this past weekend. After a bit of rain on Saturday morning, all was good when the sun showed up.
Thanks to Jay Shartenberg and team for the Friday layout; Ben Bardo for the PR efforts; Linda Hennessey for organizing the Rotarian volunteers; Beth Leconte for handling all the registration efforts and site layout; and a big Rotary thank you to Herk Herchenroether and Sandy Cutting for stepping up as our new co-chairs.
Final numbers still being work on, however, looks like at least $13,000 raised to support scholarships and club projects.

Formerly Sunshine, this part of the meeting will have it's own committee of 3 to 5 Rotarians who will explore how to make member birthdays/Rotary anniversaries/”members in the news”/member health & convalescence/member remembrance another part of our club's “service above self”. Joe Giorgio, Year Up – internships for low-income young adults
Joe Giorgio, Associate Director of Operations for Year Up - Providence. Joe has had extensive high level corporate management experience throughout his career, such as serving as Vice President of Global Human Resources for Medtronic, the giant medical device manufacturer; Human Resource Director of Covidien, the predecessor of Medtronic; and Human Resource director of Liz Claiborne and Rand McNally. He joined Year Up in 2015 and has bought his vast experience to provide great insight into the management and strategic development of Year Up.
Joe will gave us insight into this wonderful national non-profit organization that provides low-income young adults in Providence, ages 18-24 with a one-year, intensive training program that includes a combination of hands-on skills development, coursework eligible for college credit, corporate internships, and wraparound support. Joe mentioned success stories like the young man who's now working at a bank in Westerly. He talked about last year's trained class (Class 23) which has 95% of its interns employed or furthering their education. Average pay of Year Up trained interns just over $16/hour or just over $33,000/yr.
Pam Ancheta ended the meeting by reciting Rotary's 4-Way Test. She would be remiss if she didn't acknowledge her failure to uphold the standard of the test at today's meeting by not allowing enough time for the Art Festival update agenda item. So in an attempt to rectify the omission, Festival Chair Ed McLaughlin dutifully submitted requested notes for this newsletter to inform our membership.
