Announcements
  • Wakefield Rotary Club and Chariho Rotary Club will have a joint meeting on the evening of April 16 at the Richmond Country Club. The speaker, a polio survivor from New Jersey, will talk about the importance of the Polio Plus campaign. Please plan to join the group for fellowship with our neighboring club.
  • Jay Shartenberg announced that the Events Committees next meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 12, 5:00 PM at Easter Seals.
  • Harv Whitley presented the club’s check for $1000 to Cindy Fish, in support of the Peace Dale Dinner Table, a community project hosted by the Peace Dale Congregational Church. The sit-down dinners, served every Wednesday evening, involve about 70 volunteers, who work in teams to prepare, serve, and clean up afterwards. Many community members participate, including several other churches and organizations.

Thank you for your service above self!

PROGRAM

Speaker and program: Dave Mann, WWII Veteran and Author

Dave Mann is 93 years old. He served for three years with General George Patton in a construction battalion that built bridges over the Rhine. He had many experiences that he recalls in his book, What I Fought For. Here are a few of his recollections:
  • US Army Intelligence reported that Gen. Rommel was sending an armada of tanks to a supply depot for fuel. Gen. Patton gave orders to destroy the depot and wait for the tanks to arrive. They destroyed the depot, surprised Rommel, and he surrendered.
  • General Patton always stood up in his vehicle and insisted on wearing a shiny helmet, even though it made him a target. He never said people worked “for” him, always “with” him.
  • Dave’s unit was off duty in a French town friendly to the Allies when an incoming shell scored a direct hit on the house where they were staying, killing 12 Americans but sparing Dave.
  • He had a 30-day leave in Devens, MA just before his discharge and was so excited to be able to get pastrami sandwiches that he ate one every day for a month. He gained so much weight that the buttons on his uniform were bursting. A lieutenant ordered him to get fitted for a new uniform, even though he was discharged the next day.

Dave was wounded three times and received the Purple Heart. His advice to us is not just to thank service members and veterans for their service but to ask them what they did and listen to their stories. So many veterans of World War II are passing away that soon there will not be any more left, so their memories are important history. Dave stayed after the meeting to shake hands and sign copies of his book for the Rotarians.
