“A Community Together”
A Community Together is a nonprofit organization with the purpose of helping elders in Narragansett and South Kingstown stay in their homes as they age. A discussion group at OLLI originally identified the need, and the group sought the advice of Dr. Chip Teel, who has experience with similar efforts elsewhere.
Some of the services provided by volunteers include transporting people to appointments or errands, working in the garden, walking pets, helping with technology needs, providing companionship, and having a daily “check-in” call for folks living alone. The philosophy of A Community Together is member-to-member assistance, meaning that all members must volunteer and all members are eligible to receive help. Members request services online or by phone if necessary. Applicants are vetted for criminal and driving offenses to ensure the safety of the other members.
A Community Together receives funding from several sources. Membership is $300 per year ($400 for a couple); Associate membership (volunteering to help others but not to request help) is $200. In addition to membership fees, the organization receives grants and tax-deductible donations from individuals and organizations. The group is also partnering with the Elks’ Home RAP for assistance. If you are interested in volunteering you can get more information at actneighbors@gmail.com, https://acommunitytogether.helpfulvillage.com, or (401)284-7766.
